PSLE: Cheating (Written by Emilia)

Radiant rays of the sun shone through the slits of the blinds, washing my bedroom in its brilliance as I woke up. I grinned like a Cheshire cat lapping up a bowl of milk. Today was my Science examination and I was sure I would top the class since I had burned the midnight oil just to study for it. I jumped out of bed, brushed my teeth, got dressed, grabbed a piece of toast and made my way to school.

On the way, I met my best friend, Lisa. Lisa’s face was pale and the lines on her face were creased with worry. “What’s wrong?” I asked. She told me that she had not studied for the Science examination and was worried that she would fail. I told her not to worry and just try her best. Upon reaching to our classroom, our teacher, Ms Lee, told us to take out our pencil cases and put our bags outside the classroom. Once everyone had settled down, Ms Lee started handing out the examination papers. “You may begin!” boomed Ms Lee. Everyone frantically turned the pages and started writing.

I found the Science paper as easy as ABC, but some questions were tough and had left me dumbfounded. I was halfway through the paper, trying to think of an answer for a “not-so-easy” question. I scratched my head and muttered to myself some science explanations as I tried to understand what the question. I was still trying to comprehend the question when I received a tap on my shoulder. It was Lisa. “Pat, what is the answer for this question?” She asked, holding up the paper in her hands. It was a very easy question and I could not believe she did not know how to answer it. I told her coolly that she should try to think of an answer, depending on her own merit.

Lisa looked at me in despair and whispered “Hurry! Tell me the answer while Ms Lee is not looking!” I could not believe what I had just heard and I was about to turn back to continue to do my paper and ignore Lisa’s pleas when a figure shadowed over me. It was Ms Lee! “Emilia and Lisa! What are you to doing?” A gut-ripping fear flashed down the length of my spine as I turned around and stared at Ms Lee in horror while Lisa mumbled something about going to the washroom. All twenty-eight pairs of eyes pointed in the direction of Lisa and me. I gnawed my lower lip as Ms Lee dragged us outside the classroom, in order not to disturb my classmates.

Ms. Lee bombarded us with a series of questions. I finally had the courage to tell her what had happened. Lisa glared at me, her wintry-piercing eyes filling with hate, and pinning me on the spot. Ms Lee dragged both of us to the principal’s office, and I was forced to tell the story again. Mdm Chong, the principal, listened to me and gave Lisa a hard look. Lisa did not dare to stare Mdm Chong’s eyes, but lowered her head in shame. Lisa’s parents were called up and Lisa was duly punished for trying to cheat. She was also suspended from school for two weeks.

Mdm Chong gave me a pat on my shoulder and praised me for my valour to tell on my best friend before I was sent back to class to continue the Science paper and was given extra time to complete. I hoped Lisa would learn from her mistakes, repent and turn over a new leaf. As I handed my Science paper, I wondered if my friendship with Lisa would last. After two weeks, Lisa returned back to school and apologized to me and told me that Mdm Chong had given her a chance to retake the Science paper again and asked if I would help her. I was too happy to oblige.

For the next few days, I helped Lisa revise her notes and questioned her and prodded her to continue. A few weeks later, Ms Lee announced the Science results. I had gotten an A while Lisa had gotten an A. It seemed that my encouragement to her had paid off! After school, you can see two girls, linking arms chatting and laughing, walking further and further away from Admiralty Primary School, until their shadows disappear into horizon, sharing big grins.

Score 37/40
