PSLE: You were with your friends along the road when you heard a scream

“I am so exhausted!  The coach is a tyrant, forcing us to run around ten rounds around the stadium tracks !” I lamented, dragging my sore feet.

“Yes!  This baseball training is making my muscles ache like hell!”  Sandiya complained with a sigh.

“I want to quit!”  cried Chloe.  Both Sandiya and I stared goggle-eyed at her and replied in unison, “No, you are not going to abandon us.”

My friends, Chloe and Sandiya, and I were on our way to MacDonalds, trudging along a quiet road.  We were talking nineteen to the dozen when a deafening scream sliced through the air.  “Help!  Help!  Robbery!” a high-pitched nasal voice cried out.

I spotted a bespectacled woman struggling to save her handbag from a menacing-looking snatch-thief who was on a Honda motorbike.  The olive-skinned crook gave the woman a tight slap and her glasses fell off onto the pavement, shattering into smithereens.  He then gave a sinister smirk and stepped on the accelerator to zoom off.

How could he do that to the eldery lady?  A sense of justice revved up and indignant anger arose within me.  I decided to fight the baddy!

I ran forward and started hitting the thief with my baseball bat.  I thought he would abandon his plan and escape but I was deadly wrong!  The villain was seized with rage and his whole face turned beetroot red.  He hopped off his motorcycle and hissed, “You busybody!  I shall teach you a lesson you will never forget!”   He snatched my baseball bat, threw it away and started ramming his heavy punches into my frail frame.  I yelped like an abused puppy, pleading for mercy.  But  it was to no avail.

Realising the severity of the matter, Chloe and Sandiya sprang into action.  They grabbed their baseball bats and hit him hard.  The sudden attack caught him by surprise.  His head started bleeding profusely and he staggered to stand properly.  His vision started to blur and he collapsed onto the tarmac unconscious.

The elderly lady swiftly called the police with her mobile from her handbag.  Within minutes, wails of sirens reverberated through the air.  A police patrol car arrived with an ambulance.  The police officers took down our statements and the unconscious man was handcuffed and placed onto a stretcher before he was sent to the nearest hospital.  The lady thanked us profusely and even took a photograph of us.

The next day, our photograph and an article of our bravery was splashed on the front page of the Home section of the Straits Times.  Only did we know that the lady was a journalist and she reported our bravery on the papers.  The principal commended us during the assembly and my heart swelled with pride.  It was definitely the proudest moment of my life!
