A stray dog, whose heart-breaking story of abuse touched many Singaporeans, was put to sleep on Saturday.
The female mongrel, Wander, was believed to have been hit on the face repeatedly with a metal chain, leaving its face and snout disfigured, oozing pus and blood.
“Her caregivers have come to this painful decision with a heavy heart as she was recently diagnosed with cancer. Thank you for all the love and support shown. Rest in peace Wonderful Wander.”
The announcement was met with shock and sadness by netizens, who wrote in to ask if more could be done to cure Wander. Some questioned the suddenness of the news.
Daphne Gui posted, “I thought Wander is doing well too, that’s why she is transferred to M&M. I am still taken aback and devastated. In any way, I just hope that’s the best for her because she has been through a lot.”
Eric Siow posted, “Please reconsider the decision, we all know that Wander does not want to be PTS (put to sleep), after a long fight she finally recover, now all her effort will go to waste.”
In follow-up posts, MWS said that Wander’s condition had “deteriorated drastically”. The last vet report confirmed that Wander was suffering from cancer growth due to the inflammation from her injuries.
MWS described the dog as being just “skin and bones” as it was not eating, and the growth on its face was “so aggressive” that its eyes were “swollen shut”.
“The kindest thing we can do for her now is to set her free,” the shelter said.
When news of Wander’s abuse first surfaced in January, many rallied behind the stray. They were horrified at the extent of its injuries and various people offered to donate money for Wander’s medical fees.
At 12.55 pm on Saturday, Wander was cremated at Mutts and Mittens. Rest in peace, Wander.

The female mongrel, Wander, was believed to have been hit on the face repeatedly with a metal chain, leaving its face and snout disfigured, oozing pus and blood.
It was eventually brought to Mdm Wong’s Shelter for care in January, over a month after the wound was first inflicted. It was here that Wander’s story first made local headlines.
Last month, Wander was transferred to board at Mutts & Mittens for professional care due to the complexity of its wound.
In a post on its Facebook page on Friday, Mdm Wong’s Shelter announced that Wander will be put to sleep on Saturday because of a cancerous growth on its face, a direct result of her earlier injuries.“Her caregivers have come to this painful decision with a heavy heart as she was recently diagnosed with cancer. Thank you for all the love and support shown. Rest in peace Wonderful Wander.”
