PSLE: Giving Up Seat

The air from the air conditioner was hot instead of cold.  It was such a scorching day and the bus was bursting at the seams.  Jevon had just finished his tuition and on his way home.  The corpulent man beside him was snoring loudly, salivating from the corner of his mouth.  How disgusting!

Just then, a heavily pregnant lady inched her way along the passageway.  She looked like she would give birth any moment.  Jevon felt sorry for her and immediately gesturing her to take his seat.  The lady beamed broadly and thanked him for his chivalry.  But to their greatest horror, the obese man placed his bags onto the empty seat.

“Excuse me, Mister.  This seat is meant for the lady, not for your bags,” Jevons boomed indignantly, the righteousness rising within him.

The obese man feigned ignorance and refused to budge.  A million thought flashed across Jevon’s mind.  How could he get the seat for the lady?

A brainwave hit him.  He gingerly placed the bags on the floor but his efforts proved futile for the man opened his eyes and looked daggers at him.

“Don’t touch my stuff!  If not, you will be sorry for it!”  the man threatened.

Jevon swallowed the stone in his throat and started crying.  The pregnant lady comforted him and cooed, “It’s okay.  I can stand.”

By this time, the passengers were throwing appalled stares at the man.  Alas!  This selfish man continued to remain nonchalant.

Then, out of nowhere, a shadow loomed over Jevons and the corpulent man.   Jevons looked up and saw the most muscular man he had ever seen.  Standing beside him was like David standing beside Goliath.

With his big hand, he gave the fat man a forceful tug and cried, “If you do not get down the bus, I will make sure that you roll down instead!”

Panic  engulfed the man.  His proud face melted away and his wretched face now revealed trembling fear.  He was mortified with embarrassment and he alighted hastily in record time - without his bags - once the bus screeched to a halt.

Finally, Jevons and the pregnant woman got their seats.  Smiles were plastered all over their faces.  They thanked their hero for his help and he smiled broadly, saying, “It’s my pleasure.”
