7-year-old falls to death in mall

TRAGIC: Girl slipped through an opening near escalator, say police

KUALA LUMPUR: A WEEKEND family outing to The Gardens at Mid Valley City turned tragic yesterday when a 7-year-old girl slipped and fell to her death from the third floor of the mall.
In the 2.20pm incident, Nurul Emielda Nadia Sallehuddin was believed to have slipped through a small opening by the side of an escalator on the third floor, near the parking lot.

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Azlee Abdullah said checks at the scene showed the small-sized girl slipped through an opening next to the escalator.

He said the family had just parked their car on the same floor and were walking to the escalator with the child.

"Based on the girl's father's statement, he had taken his eyes off the child for a moment and he suddenly heard a loud thump on the ground floor. When he and his wife peeped over, they saw Nurul Emielda sprawled on the ground floor of the mall."

Azlee said the girl suffered severe head injuries when she landed between the two escalators on Level G.

"An ambulance was rushed to the scene but she was pronounced dead by then."

A huge crowd of onlookers milled around for a closer look of the accident but the mall management cordoned off the ground floor for almost an hour, for investigators to carry out their work.

A woman, believed to be the mother of the victim, was wailing near the child's body.
Nurul Emeilda's remains were sent to University Malaya Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.
