You were at the night market with your brother. All of a sudden, your brother took off running.

H
We were at the night market
“What do you want for your birthday?” Kiat, my older brother asked as we meandered around the night market, browsing at the goods on display.

It was a busy scene there.  Stall-holders were trying to outdo one another with the most attractive merchandise and the best bargains.  The boisterous bargaining between vendors and customers was reaching a deafening level as the smell of fried, savoury food was wafting through the air.

“How about an i-phone?  I know you can’t afford it,”  I teased mischievously.

“How would you know?” was his reply with a naughty wink.

Brother stole i-phone
We continued looking around.  All of a sudden, my brother dashed off like a bullet shot out of a pistol.   I was flabbergasted!

Behind him, an infuriated man was hot on his heels.  “Stop running, you rascal!”  he cried aloud.

What was going on?  I thought to myself.  Curiosity overwhelmed me and I wasted no time but to give chase.

By this time, pairs of eyes were watching the scene with interest. Kiat was weaving in and out of stalls at top speed, with his shoulders hunched low while beads of cold sweat dotted his pimpled forehead.

“You thief!  Give me back my i-phone!” he yelled.

Oh my God!  I put two and two together and realized that Kiat had stolen an i-phone for ME!  How could he be so foolish!  “Run, Kiat, run!”  I screamed within my heart.   I could only pray for God’s mercy now.

Brother got caught
Unfortunately, Lady Luck was not with him.  As he sped, the i-phone slipped from his grip, flew from his hand and landed in a deep fryer, filled with blackish, boiling oil.  A few brawny men then pounced on him and rained heavy blows on him. The pain must have been so excruciating that even the grip of a dog's jaw would have seemed merely troublesome.  Instantly, a pang of sorrow gripped my heart for my brother had become a punching bag!

Next, they quickly tied him up with a thick nylon rope and rendered him powerless.  “Let me go!  Let me go!”  Kiat shrieked, struggling to break free.

Smack!  “Shut up!”  the i-phone owner hissed, striking a  hard, stinging slap on his face. The stall-holder who owned the deep fryer speedily dug out the sizzling hot i-phone with a pair of tongs and returned it to him.
“See what you have done to my i-phone!  First, you stole it!  And as if that was not bad enough, you threw it into boiling oil!” He took a deep breath and exhaled through his nose, the air hissing  through his moustache.

Tears started rolling down Kiat’s swollen cheeks which were now dripping with thin streaks of blood.

A small crowd, that had gathered around us, were whispering among themselves in hushed tones.

“A thief at such a young age!”

“A hooligan!”

“Serve him right!”

“Give him a chance!”

I pleaded for mercy for my brother
Wails of siren suddenly reverberated through the streets.  Police officers hopped off the patrol car and marched towards us.  I was shocked to the core by this chain of events.  I did not care about what others thought of me.  I wanted to save my brother badly.  At the defining moment, I knelt down and pleaded, “Please forgive my brother!  Please give him another chance.”  Kiat stared at me and cried.

However, the police officer shook his head adamantly.  “I am sorry, son.  I’m afraid this has become a police case.”  With that, he clinked the handcuffs over his hands.

Kiat lowered his head in shame.  I was so angry with him!  “Why are you so stupid?  Why did you have to steal the i-phone for me?”  I cried and my eyes took on a reddish hue and two shining tears fell and left two crystal tracks on my cheeks. I grabbed my brother and refused to let go.  My heart had shattered into a million pieces.

Brother sent to police station
The police started dragging him toward the police car.  “Don’t take away my brother!” I howled and tried to pull the policemen away.  The officer brushed me off with a swish and I landed onto the dirt with a dull thud.

“I am sorry,” Kiat mouthed as his grief-stricken eyes sliced into mine.  The police car soon sped off.  I gave chase, screaming, “Kiat!  Kiat! Come back!” He was gone.  As the crowd dispersed, the patrol car soon disappeared behind the cloak of the night.  I was devastated; I knew I was going to miss him for a long, long time.
