You were doing your homework in your room one evening. Suddenly, you heard your mother scream and you went to investigate.
"Josh, quickly do your homework. I will be in the master bedroom," Mum spoke in her perpetual nasal high-pitched voice.
"Josh, quickly do your homework. I will be in the master bedroom," Mum spoke in her perpetual nasal high-pitched voice.
"Shut up. Don't be so naggy," I muttered under my breath. I could not stand Mum at all. She was always so domineering and long-winded. Sometimes, I wished she was out of my life! It was night and I had loads of homework to do.
"Ahh!" Mum shrieked, followed by a deafening thud. What was that? Was it a cockroach, a rat or worse still, an alien trying to kill us? Scary imagination flooded through my mind. My heart started beating African drums as my face blanched white in trepidation. I had to find out what it was!
I tiptoed to the master bedroom door. I opened the door very slightly to peek. The whole bedroom was in a mess. There was a tanned-skin Chinese man wearing black shirt and pants. A tattoo of a faded dragon peeked from the gap between his shirt. A malicious smirk crept across his face.
Mum was tied to the seat for a thick rope had coiled around her hands and her feet.
The man hollered, "Give me all your money!"
"I have no money," Mum cried.
I wanted to punch the man's face and ask him to scram but I knew I was no match for him. It would bring us more harm. The man started raining blows on my poor mum, who pleaded for mercy. It was in vain.
What should I do? Suddenly, a brainwave hit me like a streak of lightning. I ran to the living room, punched a few numbers and called the police.
"Mr Policeman, there is a robber in my house and he has a gun!" I whispered in a hurry. After giving him my address, I immediately put my i-phone back into my pocket.
Suddenly, a shadow loomed over me. "What you are doing?" the evil man bellowed.
"No..nothing," I replied with tremor in my voice, my body quaking with fear.
He grabbed me by the arm and brought me to my mum. He took out his gun and pointed it at me.
"Now, where is the money? If you still don't tell me, I will kill your son!" threatened the gunman.
"No, please don't do that! I beg you," pleaded my mom who pointed to the hidden compartment in the wardrobe.
The robber emptied everything from the cabinet - cash, Rolex watch and diamond ring. Next, he spun around and aimed it at my mum. "Now, you shall die!" His authoritative bellow reverberated throughout the room.
"NO! Wait, let my mum go. Let me die in her place!" I insisted, tears rolling down my cheeks. My mum's face took on a reddish hue, and she began sobbing too.
"I like this! Everyone loves each other, very touching. I will kill YOU!" he hissed through his moustache, taking a deep breath, pointing at my mom. Next, he dragged my mom into the study and BANG! A shot rang out, followed by a dull thud.
Then, he burst into my room and pointed his pistol at me! "Now, go and meet your mom at the Hades!" he cried aloud, his black eyes slicing into me, the corner of his mouth tilting up. He pulled the trigger. I closed my eyes and awaited the execution. CLICK! CLICK! The pistol was jammed. No matter how hard he pulled, the pistol would not work! The evil man exploded in full fury and launched into a torrential barrage on me. I thought I was going to die! The pain I felt was so excruciating that even the grip of a dog's jaw would seem merely troublesome.
However, heaven was on my side! Wails of sirens reverberated in the air. The robber made his escape but the policemen cordoned off the area, subdued and arrested him. One police officer untied me and I ran to my mom. "Take care, Josh. I love you!" She held my gaze for a moment before sliding off like a spirit. My mum passed out and died.
“Josh, quickly do your homework. I will be in the master bedroom,” a gravelling voice called out. It was Dad.
Two shining tears leave crystal tracks on my thin cheeks as I recall the incident. How I miss my mom’s nagging! How I miss her nasal high-pitched voice! I wish she would be in my life for once! A pang of pain grips my heart. I have learnt to treasure everything I have – especially the people in my life.
