PSLE : A Chance Encounter with a Stray Dog

Thunder rumbled in a distance. Rain was imminent as the sky was overcast in a mixture of charcoal grey clouds. Edward hastened his footsteps through the dark and deserted alley, worried that he would end up a soaked duck in the heavy downpour .

Ruff! Ruff! Loud barks resounded through the alley. Edward froze. Where did the sound come from? He scanned around and spotted a shade of white and brown. Gingerly, he approached the source of the sound and spotted a mongrel pup whining in pain. His little paws were stuck between the stubborn, rusty drain. As Edward inched nearer, the pup gave a malicious snarl, warning him to back off.

"Don't worry, little doggie. I am here to help," Edward spoke in the gentlest voice.

With a little tug, the paws were pulled out of the rusty blades. Lovingly, Edward used his handkerchief to wrap around the bloodied paw. The pup leapt off his arms and limped away. Edward was about to continue his way home when 'Grrrr!' a sudden growl startled him. Shadows loomed over him.

He whipped around and saw a pack of gargantuan strays glowering at him with flecks of saliva at the corner of their mouths. Fear struck Edward like how a crucifix would pierce a vampire's heart! Instinctively, he knew he was doomed for. He was at a loss on what to do when a brainwave hit him. Run! An inner voice screamed within him. Straightaway, his lanky legs took flight.

Unfortunately, the dogs were too fast for him. In a split second, he was circled by them with no escape route at all! The head of the pack started pouncing toward him. He closed his eyes, fearing the worst.

All of a sudden, a pitiful whine rang out. The lead dog halted and turned in the direction of the sound. It was the dog that Edward had just saved! It was as if his new-found friend was begging for mercy on his behalf.

The next amazing thing happened. The little pup scampered towards him, turned and glared at the pack, barking maliciously, as if to warn them not to come nearer. It was quite an amusing sight.

Strangely, the strays got the idea. The leader of the dog started scurrying off and the rest followed in a single file. Soon, the canines rounded the street corner and disappeared.

Edward turned to the little dog. "Thanks, buddy!" He stroked its head gently. The pup wagged its tail proudly. The rain started to pour. Edward picked up his school bag and set off. The pup watched him until his silhouette became a dot in a distance.
