PSLE: Pickpocket on the bus

Beep!  Johnny was taking the bus home from school He was standing squashed against his humongous teacher, Mrs. Taylor, who was also going home from school.

Behind Johnny was a man who looked like a normal commuter. But suddenly, Johnny saw him eyeing Mrs. Taylor's bag. Five minutes later,he was still eyeing it. “He definitely is not a typical commuter," thought Johnny in his heart. The man moved into position near Mrs.Taylor, shoving Johnny aside.

Johnny was shocked and thought, "Now that's what I call a suspicious-looking man!" The man looked left and right to see if anyone was looking at him. Johnny pretended that he was not looking. He was watching every step the man made in the bus. He looked like he was expecting Mrs. Taylor to fall asleep. Sure enough, Mrs. Taylor, who was holding on to a hanging handle, dozed off.  The man came closer to Mrs. Taylor and was about to take something from her bag.

Johnny had to think fast. He asked the man, "Excuse me, Sir.  Which bus do I take to go to block 119?" The man stared at him and gave him a gruff response. Johnny looked at the map to see where the bus route was heading. He thanked the man and pretended not to mind him.

The man looked relieved and thought that Johnny was not paying him any attention. But he was wrong! Johnny was still watching him like a vulture. As sly as a for, the man slipped his hand into Mrs Taylor's bag and took out her wallet. Johihy's eves widened as he knew that that day was her pay day and the wallet was likely to contain a lot of money. The brazen thief counted his money and pretended it was his!

He spotted Johnny looking at him with big eyes and gaping mouth.  He froze. Johnny acted fast and shouted, “Pickpocket!" Everyone in the bus was startled and Mrs. Taylor also woke up from her standing nap.

At that very moment the doors of the bus onened and the man made a run for it. Johnny left his bag in the bus and in an urgent tone asked the bus driver to wait for him. He chased after the man but lost him for he was hiding in the bushes for cover.

However, his slight movement gave him away and Johnny managed to pin down the pickpocket with the help of some passers-by. Mrs. Taylor, who came panting with heavy breaths, thanked everyone for their help. They tied the thief up and loaded him up the bus to a nearby police station. Nobody minded the hassle and everyone was glad that justice had been served to that sneaky thief.
