PSLE: A Great White Shark!

The gentle breeze made the leaves of the coconut trees rustle and the air smelt of salt. It was so refreshing. Elle and her little elfin brother, Tommy, together with their dad, John, were at the beach that was dotted with holidaymakers with their families. Peals of laughter resounded through the air.

Tommy loved playing with Elle. Despite the six-year age gap, they were very close. Tommy was Elle's shadow. The children were collecting some Jasmine flowers to be used to decorate their sandcastles while their father was dozing off under the awning of a gigantic umbrella. In the middle of the sandcastle was a drawing of a heart shape with the words ‘Tommy loves Elle’.

As it was hot, Elle decided to swim in the cool, azure water with her pink, Hello Kitty swimming float.

“Don’t go too far!” Tommy cried. “I’ll be scared without you around!”

“Don’t worry! I’ll be nearby. You can count on me!” reassured the older Elle who flashed an endearing grin.

Elle bolted towards the whitish waves and plunged in. To relax, she closed her eyes to enjoy the rhythmic movements of the seawater. However, her happiness was short-lived. Little did she know that the currents were pulling her further and further away from the shoreline. The people became like tiny Lego figurines.

Suddenly, Elle felt something brush against her soft skin. It was waxy and smooth. Instantly, she opened her eyes and looked around her. She saw nothing! Goosebumps broke across her nape. Her heart palpitated against her ribs and her hair was standing on end. What was that?

Then the mean beast appeared from nowhere and tried to devour her. Oh no! It was a Great White Shark! Her face turned ghastly pale. Quivering in trepidation, she flew into panic. She could see its dark big eyes and its colossal jaws with rows of pointed teeth. Instinctively, she kicked hard to chase away the shark. Was she going to die? Would she succeed? Her hard kick hurt the sensitive pointy snout of the shark badly. However, instead of retreating, the killing machine was enraged and launched a second attack. Elle screamed at the top of her voice.

Her cries attracted Elle’s father's attention and he realized her girl was in trouble. He jumped into the waters to save her. However, before he was even near the halfway mark, the monstrous shark whizzed towards Elle at lightning speed, its dorsal fin gliding across the water surface. It dragged her under the deep waters. Elle fought hard and struggled to ward off its attack. It was useless. Everyone at the shore screamed in panic and Tommy began to cry aloud.

Soon, the sea became quiet. Elle was nowhere to be found. A patch of seawater turned crimson red. Only the Hello Kitty float was still resting on the crest of the waves. The shark vanished completely.

“Elle, Elle! Come back! Come back!” the little Tommy wailed aloud in tears.

Only the moaning of the waves greeted him. Elle was gone. The high tide brought the waves in which washed away the Jasmine flowers and the words on the sand turned blurry and faded away. Elle was gone. The sandcastle collapsed and crumbled into wet sand. Tommy sat beside it and wept bitterly with his crying dad beside him. No more laughter. No more play. No more sandcastles. Elle was gone - forever.
