A busy bus terminal.
The beehive-like bus terminal was packed with tired students laden with elephantine school bags and workers returning back home. I was famished and parched. My legs felt like lead as I trudged forward. Beads of perspiration rolled down my forehead. “Why must the peak hours be so crowded?” I grumbled to myself. I let out a puff of frustration.
A chaotic class in the teacher's absence.
Pieces of paper bombs and planes were strewn all over the floor. It was World War 3 in class 5/2. Boys versus girls. Tables acted as barricades. The class monitor acted as if he were the general. The kids were shrieking like banshees. Suddenly, a pair of scissors flew across the classroom. “Take cover,” someone yelled. It hit the whiteboard and made a deep dent.
OR
In class, my notorious friends were running all over and throwing paper planes across the classroom. Some were chewing bubble gums while other were chomping titbits. The odour of their perspiration filled the air as they had just finished their basketball practice. A sweet jasmine fragrance suddenly lingered in the air. It was a familiar scent – the perfume of Mrs Raja. Her eyes were like hot coals.
Two boys fighting at a playground.
The boys were ruthlessly kicking and punching each other. The obese one was trying to pounce on him and push him down as if he were a sumo wrestler. The thin one could hardly catch his breath and dexterously dodged his moves. “You fatso, catch me if you can?” the scrawny one stuck his tongue out and taunted. The fat one clenched his fist and charged forward like an enraged bull, his belly bouncing as he ran. The skinny one was too fast for him. He acted like a matador (bull-fighter) and evaded him.
A group of pupils at a fast-food restaurant
Pupils were munching their french fries to their hearts' contents and chattering among themselves, completely oblivious to the surrounding glares. Being carnivorous, they removed all the lettuce and pickles from the burgers and threw them on the floor. It was horrendous! How could they do that! Someone may slip and fall! My face darkened in anger as I stormed toward them.
A sleepy pupil during a lesson
The teacher's squeaky voice droned on and on like a broken radio. Kevin gave a muffled yawn. His two hands were propping his chin for he was dozing off. His eyelids were getting heavier and heavier, before they drooped to a close. One sheep. Two sheep. Three sheep. Soft piggy snores escaped from his throat. Out of the blue, a marker flew across the classroom and landed on his forehead – bull's eye – and shattered his dream. At that instant, the classroom broke out in uproarious laughter.

School canteen during lunch time
The canteen was bustling with life. It was teeming with hungry students. Snake-like queues formed in front of the busy stalls. Money changed hands. Pupils rushed to their vacant tables and started gobbling down their food like famished wolves with relish. Students were munching their food amidst sounds of chattering voices, chuckling laughter and the clanking cutlery.
OR
The school bell shrieked, signalling recess time. John was making his way to the Japanese food stall which he always patronised. The smell of the broth charged into his nostrils and whetted his appetite. After he had bought his favourite udon, he looked a vacant seat but accidentally tripped over and the udon flew and fell onto the principal's head and he ended up looking like a very wet mop.
A MRT train station
Commuters rushed into the jammed packed train while others were squeezing and shoving their way out. Some had impatient frowns on their foreheads while others wore tired expressions. The smell of stale perspiration lingered in the air. On the opposite platform, some passengers were holding onto their position behind the yellow line, waiting edgily for the train to rattle in, hoping to secure a seat. It was peak hours.
A busy shopping mall
It was the great Singapore sale. The shopping mall was packed with shoppers, some with their children tagging along. It was hard to move about and the air was stale due to the colossal turnout. Prices were slashed ridiculously low. Customer were greedily snatching the merchandise as if they were free of charge. Children were crying, looking for their missing parents. The scene was chaotic!
An empty amusement park
A gust of chilling wind howled and blew in curves. Piles of dead leaves fluttered in the air and scattered all around the theme park. The sun was beginning to set and there was no one in sight, only elongated shadows of dim lampposts and lonely trees. Instead of laughter, there was only silence. Instead of merriment, there was only abandonment.
OR
Silence blanketed the amusement park. Time literally froze. The usual roar of exuberance was absent. Laughter was no longer there. Stalls of popcorn, cotton candy and hotdog buns vanished. The rides in rainbow colours and bright lights halted and dulled. The lights were out. Imagery of happy families with parents and children were all gone. Sadly, the park seemed abandoned like a lonely grandfather yearning for the visit of his beloved grandchildren.
A hiker's forest trail
The forest was green with life. Birds chirped merrily and butterflies fluttered cheerfully as the sun in amazing golden hue rose from the east and coloured the skies. Creepy crawlers were already busy at work, searching for food. Greedy squirrels were stuffing nuts in their humongous cheeks and mischievous monkeys were swinging from trees to trees, hanging from the tapering gnarled branches. Fragrance of blossoming flowers wafted in the air while mushrooms were hiding from the scorching heat under the thick foliage of trees.
OR
The golden sunlight seeped through the gaps between the intercepting canopy of trees and rays of light were dancing on the forest floor, casting shades of grey on the undergrowth, as the gust of wind blew and rustled the leaves which were still wet with dew. The fresh air was so invigorating. The weather was perfect for a forest trail. Animals were now awake and heard in a distance. The singing birds and the chirping insects were performing a symphony of music contributing to the tune of Mother Nature that could soothe any tired soul.
